Last year Dubbo Local Government Area (LGA) had 634 reports of thefts from vehicles and 2013 is going to be another bad year, according to NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) data.
By comparison, Bathurst had 341 reported vehicle break-ins and Orange had 353.
Police are asking car owners to do their bit by ensuring the safety of their vehicles and items inside them.
Crime prevention officer for the Orana region, Senior Constable Ian Burns is concerned with the volume of automotive break-ins that are reported. He said removing valuables from a car takes some of the incentive away for thieves.
"It's our number one focus along with break and enters. It's something we really want to see cut down," Senior Constable Burns said.
"Most of the the time with these thefts it is people looking to get their hands on wallets, handbags and easy to steal items. They want cash, or items that are easy to offload like mobile phones and GPS devices.
"People should take these items with them when possible, or at the very least store them out of sight in the vehicle."
Senior Constable Burns said even simple things like making sure windows are fully wound up and doors are locked can prevent some break-ins.
"When you park and leave your car, it is a good idea to do a quick checklist," he said.
"When possible ensure the surrounding area is well-lit at night, personal valuables are stored out of sight or taken from the vehicle and doors and windows are locked - it's as simple as that," he said.
